Taro Patch-Hawaiian culture class field trip

The magic of the taro.....the force was not with us that day. The girls enrolled in a Hawaiian cultures class and at the end of the 2-week class, they had a field trip to the Taro Patch. I had heard really cool things about the experience but started to worry when they sent a list of items the kids would need to participate. A change of clothes to include panties, shoes and a towel. I thought maybe they would be having a water day too. When we arrived to the site, it looked rather tame. Our group was sent to the woods to gather nature pieces for a frame to put our group photo in at the end of the day. We gathered and had tons of leaves, seeds and kukui nuts.
The frames turned out beautiful. Then it was our turn to head to the patch. The muck was DEEP! The entire group was allowed to walk through the muck (patch) and gather stalk. It was an interesting process. Unfortunately, we were unable to go into the muck because we all had open cuts from running in the race the week before. Parasites are all in the muck and they refused to let anyone with visable open cuts in the patch. Knowing how sick parasites can make someone..I was all but thrilled to remain out of the patch.
The girls did get to go in the spring that was 99.9 % clear spring water. That water was so clear, it was beautiful. They had a wonderful time jumping in the water, learning some more Hula dancing, playing ancient Hawaiian games with stones and eating a traditional Hawaiian lunch!
I was very glad they had gone and even though we didn't get the FULL experience, we also didn't have to go to the ER for antibiotics!
AMEN!.....successful field trip
